Professor Rizzo studied medicine and trained in internal medicine in Italy. He spent several years in the United States, working at the University of California under the direct supervision of Professor Ronald M. Krauss. There he was able to perform a number of studies on the pathophysiology, metabolism, atherogenicity, and clinical properties of plasma lipids and lipoproteins, in patients with different metabolic disorders, including dyslipidemia, diabetes, obesity, and the metabolic syndrome.
Professor Rizzo is Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the School of Medicine, University of Palermo, Italy with a joint position in the Division of Internal Medicine at the University Hospital, where he is Head of the Unit of Diabetes and Cardiovascular Prevention. Due to his long-standing research on metabolic disorders, he has been a Visiting Professor at the Clinic of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Clinical Nutrition, University of Zurich, Switzerland. Professor Rizzo also holds a faculty position in the USA, where he is Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the School of Medicine, University of South Carolina.
Professor Rizzo sits on the editorial board of 10 international journals, including Metabolism (impact factor [IF]: 5.777) and BBA-Molecular Basis of Disease (IF: 5.476). He has been the recipient of national and international fellowships and awards, and acted as reviewer for 100+ international scientific journals. His research work combines translational research (focus on the effects and mechanisms of action of lipid-lowering and antidiabetic agents) and basic research (focus on novel cardiovascular risk factors), with 200+ scientific publications (total IF >700. H-Index: 42). He is ranked n.80 in the list of TOP Italian Scientists (http://www.topitalianscientists.org).
Finally, Professor Rizzo was the coordinator of a panel of European experts who published a consensus document on the pathophysiology, atherogenicity, and clinical significance of LDL subclasses and, very recently, he was elected as an Executive Board Member of the Mediterranean Group for the Study of Diabetes (MGSD) for the 2-year period 2017-2019.
