5) Principal Fields of Research and Educational Interest
My principal scientific interests in diabetology/endocrinology are the relations between insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity impairment in type 2 diabetes, their relevance for the pathogenesis of diabetes and its late complications, and the possibilities of their therapeutic modulation. I am also intensively involved in metabolic studies of the possibilities of early detection and prevention of type 2 diabetes, and of late diabetic complications, especially coronary heart disease and ischemic stroke. In addition, I have been an investigator in several studies regarding new therapeutic approaches to diabetes, e.g. oral antihyperglycemic agents, lipid-lowering agents, insulin analogues, and GLP-1 mimetics. Also, in 2011, I served as a member of the Guideline Development Group of the IDF Guideline for Management of PostMeal Glucose.
