Dr José Silva-Nunes is associate Professor at Lisbon’s Polytechnic Institute, Medical Doctor at the Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Department of the Curry Cabral Hospital – Lisbon’s Central Hospital Group, and former Consultant Medical Doctor at the Diabetes Outpatient Clinic of the Portuguese Diabetes Association. His main areas of interest are obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular risk.
Dr José Silva-Nunes obtained his medical degree from the New University of Lisbon in 1991 and his PhD in 2013 from the Medical Faculty of the University of Coimbra on the topic of “Obesity and cardiometabolic risk.”
Dr José Silva-Nunes is the general-secretary of the Portuguese Society of Diabetology and the former coordinator of the Diabetes Mellitus Study Group of the Portuguese Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism. He is the current president of the National Technical Group for the Monitoring of the Surgical Treatment of Obesity of the Portuguese General-Directorate of Health. He has been collaborating in several good practice guidelines for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes and for the treatment of severely obese patients at the Portuguese General-Directorate of Health. He has participated in several international multicenter trials in the fields of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular risk and was responsible for the organization of some national and international scientific meetings on diabetes, obesity, and insulin resistance.
