Professor Ben Slama welcomed the participants:
" Dear Colleagues,
Tunisia is particularly honored to welcome the 12th Meeting of the Mediterranean Group for the Study of Diabetes which will be held in Gammarth, in the northern suburbs of Tunis, from April 28 to May 1, 2011.
There are many advantages to the choice of Tunis-Gammarth for this event: the town is located in the heart of the Mediterranean region on a pleasant stretch of shore, surrounded by prestigious historic sites, in an environment that has long been a forum for exchanges between north and south, east and west. This congress will be a major event for the study of diabetes, and an opportunity to discover or rediscover the rich tapestry of Tunisia’s past and present.
The incidence of type 2 diabetes is predicted to rise in the 21st century, particularly in the southern Mediterranean countries. But at the same time we have at our disposal an increasing number of treatments to combat diabetes, which highlights the importance of cooperation and exchanges between our Mediterranean countries.
The MGSD Board’s ambitions for this meeting are apparent from the programme’s variety both in form (lectures, debates, short oral communications, …) and content (diabetes co-morbidities, the role of intestinal flora, optimum therapeutic targets, …).
I am very pleased to invite you to this meeting where we will seek to innovate while sustaining the tradition which has ensured the success of all our meetings in different Mediterranean towns since the founding of the MGSD in 1985.
I look forward to welcoming you to Tunisia, "
