Professor Gaetano Crepaldi earned his degree in Medicine at the University of Padova, (Italy) and served as a fellow in hematology at the University of California in Los Angeles (USA).
From 1957 to 2003, Professor Crepaldi was affiliated with the University of Padua Medical School and, in particular, as Assistant Professor of the Department of Medicine, Full Professor of Gerontology and Geriatrics, Director of the Division of Gerontology and Metabolic Diseases, Director of the Postgraduate School in Gerontology and Geriatrics, Full Professor of Internal Medicine, Director of the Department of Internal Medicine, and Director of Clinica Medica I of the Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences. In 1977, he founded and directed the Postgraduate School in Diabetology and Metabolic Diseases. He also served as Vice-President of the Biology and Medicine Committee of the National Research Council, President of the Italian Society of Diabetology, President of the Italian Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics, and President of the Italian Society of Osteoporosis and Bone Metabolism Diseases. From 1994 to 1996, he was the president of the Study Group for Diabetic Eye Complications of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, and, from 1996 to 2000, he was the president of the Mediterranean Group for the Study of Diabetes.
Professor Crepaldi was the official Italian Representative on the board of the International Association of Gerontology. He is coordinator for the areas of Diabetology, Gerontology, and Osteoporosis within the Italy-USA Agreement of Scientific and Technological Cooperation.
Professor Crepaldi is currently the Director of the National Research Council Section on Aging and the President of the Foundation for the Study of Complications in Diabetes.
He is, moreover, currently President of the Mediterranean Society of Atherosclerosis, President of the Mediterranean Society for Osteoporosis and other Skeletal Diseases, President of the Mediterranean Diet Foundation, President of the European Society for Cardiovascular Prevention, and a member of the Board of Directors of the American Federation for Aging Research.
Professor Crepaldi has authored more than 600 scientific articles regarding metabolic diseases published in major national and international scientific journals. He was the editor of the two medical textbooks: Trattato Italiano di Gerontologia e Geriatria (U.T.E.T.) and Trattato Italiano di Medicina Interna. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Aging: Clinical and Experimental Research. He is a member of the editorial board of numerous journals including Current Opinion in Lipidology, Diabetes Nutrition and Metabolism, Acta Diabetologica, Metabolismo Oggi, Pharmacological Sciences, Drugs & Aging, The Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging, and Journal of Cardiovascular Risk.
In 1989, Professor Crepaldi was awarded the Feltrinelli Prize by the National Academy of Lincei and, in 1991, the Special Merit Award of the Sandoz Foundation in recognition of his gerontological research.
